What Happens in a Consultation?

A consultation is a candid, no-pressure conversation with an expert who has been through the exact process your student is facing. Here's what to expect.

1. Candidacy Assessment

We evaluate your student's current academic profile, extracurriculars, and overall positioning — and give you a clear, honest picture of where they stand.

2. Strengths & Gaps Review

We identify what sets your student apart and what needs work — with a frank analysis of what it will take to reach their target schools.

3. Roadmap Formation

You'll leave with a clear picture of the admissions roadmap we'd build — covering essays, extracurriculars, testing, and school selection.

4. Customized Support Options

We'll walk through 2–3 options tailored to your student's goals, timeline, and needs — with transparent pricing and no pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often before a first consultation.

Is the consultation really free?

+

Yes, completely. The initial consultation is a no-commitment conversation with an expert advisor. There's no sales pressure and no obligation to continue after the call.

When should we start working with Whetstone?

+

The earlier, the better. Ideally, students begin in 9th or 10th grade so we can shape extracurriculars, capstone projects, and summer plans before the application window opens. That said, we work with juniors and seniors on focused essay and strategy support as well.

Do you work with students outside of New York City?

+

Yes. Our mentors work with students across the United States and internationally via video. We have in-person options available in New York City, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Westchester, and Scarsdale.

What programs do you offer?

+

We offer full admissions counseling, essay coaching, SAT/ACT prep, extracurricular and capstone mentorship, academic tutoring, and graduate admissions support. Most students combine two or more services into a cohesive engagement.

How is Whetstone different from other admissions firms?

+

Every Whetstone mentor is a verified alumnus of the world's most selective universities or a top-tier professional. We don't outsource to junior advisors. One mentor works with one student from start to finish — so the person who knows your story is the person helping you tell it.
